HIKING ALONG WET EMERALD WALLS

The sun's AWOL today but it kept the big dog and I company yesterday during our hike along Eagle Creek, forty miles east of Portland in the Columbia Gorge. Very few flowers and that's the way I like it right now, my need to BE THERE and SEE IT HAPPEN so incredibly overwhelming I'd just as soon find nothing in bloom if only to know I haven't missed anything.

Weird.

The path is narrow and the drop-off steep during the first mile of the hike so looking up is done at one's own peril. Nevertheless, there are places along the path where the view up is the view to beat, as drops of water like chips of diamonds sprinkle down from overhead cliffs, seeping into the emerald wall of an awakening spring.

  1. When you tell about a hike in the Gorge, I pick up my used book store find of "Hiking the Columbia River Gorge" to look it up. It is encouraging to hear what others think--other than those who wrote the book.

  2. Katney, be careful with Eagle Creek and go at unusual times. It gets very crowded and is no fun when there are a lot of people. Too narrow.

  3. Hi Ketzel,
I'm new to your blog and enjoyed reading your posts. I miss hiking and seeing the "natural gardens" in all their glory. Thanks for the prompt.

  4. I hiked through Eagle Creek about two summers ago for the first time and really enjoyed it - views, water, flora, and fauna (deer).

  5. Ketzel, it is one Gorge hike I will probably avoid. A classmate of my daughter died in the area a few weeks ago. I haven't any information as to what happened to her. I'll watch for you to post on other hikes in the Gorge, though. We are in the Yakima Valley and most often hike at Mt. Rainier.
