WANTED: GARLIC MUSTARD

And you better believe I don't want it for soup. An in-depth blog post by Portland writer Kate Bryant spells out why this spring-flowering weed is a recipe for disaster. Kate's recently back from western MA. where she witnessed (left) the takeover of garlic mustard everywhere from her hometown library to her childhood woodland garden.

Garlic mustard no news to you? And you've done what about it? Well good, keep pulling your own. But just in case you've run out and want to pull more, join the Garlic Mustard Monster Mash this Saturday, 9am, throughout Portland's Forest Park.

Nice work, Kate!

  1. It is supposed to be delicious when you do not eat the flowering plants (since they are more bitter). I am planning in trying a pesto recipe: http://www.grist.org/article/where-the-wild-things-grow. A Kalamazoo nature center in Michigan published a garlic pesto cookbook "From Pest to Pesto". This site also has a lot of useful information: http://www.stewardshipnetwork.org/site/c.hrLOKWPILuF/b.5075593/k.10A7/The_Garlic_Mustard_Challenge_2009.htm.

Thanks for the positive (pesto) and negative (pest)info. I've been pulling this thing out of my yard, neighbor's yard, and neighboring ravine. I was hoping it wasn't a native wildflower I was uprooting (I pulled up columbine for 3 years before I realized what it was :-(....) and now I know!

  4. Oh wow! I live in Western Mass and I have more and more of this plant invading my yard and garden beds. I'm happy to hear I can cook with it, but I'm not pleased to hear it's on a rampage.
